Choose the Right Scope Before Work Begins
Choose fill for the application
Topsoil, organic debris, and clean structural fill are not interchangeable. Material should be selected for the use, with unsuitable debris kept out of areas that need a stable base.
Coordinate around completed work
Foundations, drainage components, and buried installations may need approval or inspection before they are covered. Establish that sequence with the responsible contractor.
Define the surface finish
Discuss final elevation, drainage, topsoil, and seeding or other stabilization. Backfilling and finish landscaping should be separate, clearly described parts of the proposal.
Planning the Work
Agree on the excavation limits, final elevations, equipment route, and destination for excavated material before work starts. Share the builder’s or designer’s plans when available. Utility locating, any required approvals, and the handoff to the next contractor belong in the schedule; a cleared or dug site alone is not a finished building site.

Can existing dirt be reused?
Sometimes. Its suitability depends on the material and final use. A soil pile containing roots or debris should not be assumed suitable for every filling application.
Will a filled area settle?
Settlement risk depends on the material, placement, moisture, and underlying conditions. Discuss compaction requirements and whether verification is needed for your project.
Is topsoil included?
Only when the agreed scope includes it. Ask for the final surface, topsoil layer, and lawn or landscape restoration to be identified in the estimate.
