Driveway Grading for Your Property
Ruts, washouts, potholes, and uneven gravel can make a driveway frustrating to use. Ballard can assess the shape of the drive and how water crosses it before recommending grading work. The aim is a more practical driving surface with the underlying problem considered, not simply a smoother appearance for a few days.
A driveway’s surface and drainage work together. Reworking existing material may address some roughness, while soft spots, a weak base, or concentrated runoff may need additional work. Identifying the difference helps you compare a maintenance grading visit with a more extensive repair.
What to include in the conversation
- Assessment of ruts, low areas, and washouts
- Reshaping and redistribution of suitable existing material
- Discussion of crown or cross-slope
- Edge and runoff route improvements as agreed
- Additional gravel or base repair where specified

Choose the Right Scope Before Work Begins
Look beyond the potholes
A recurring depression may point to trapped water or weak ground. Discuss the cause before filling it with more gravel.
Decide whether to reuse or add material
There may be enough usable aggregate to rework the surface, or the driveway may need additional material. The estimate should distinguish grading from gravel supply.
Review intersections and entrances
The transition to a public road, a garage, or a drainage crossing can affect the finished shape. Include turning areas and shared access in the discussion.
Planning the Work
Start with the way water enters, crosses, and leaves the property. A smooth surface can still drain poorly if the outlet is too high or the surrounding elevations are overlooked. Discuss how disturbed ground will be stabilized and which finishing work is included. Photos during or shortly after rain can reveal problems that are not visible during a dry visit.
What affects your estimate?
Length, width, condition, equipment access, material requirements, and drainage repairs affect price. Repeated damage in the same location may indicate a scope beyond routine grading.
What to have ready
Share the approximate driveway length and width, photos of damage, and where water flows during rain. Describe the vehicles that use it, including trailers or delivery trucks, and any shared-use arrangements.

Questions About Driveway Grading
Do I always need new gravel?
No. Existing material may be reusable, but its quantity and condition need to be checked. A thin surface or contaminated aggregate may require added material.
How often should a gravel driveway be graded?
There is no single schedule. Traffic, drainage, material, and weather determine maintenance needs. Discuss the cause if roughness returns quickly.
Can grading repair a soft base?
Surface grading alone may not resolve it. The weak area may need separate investigation, drainage changes, or base work.
